Even before the pandemic shut offices and forced people to work from home, the rise of the digital nomad lifestyle has become a defining trend. That’s because being able to work remotely offers us the freedom-defining opportunity of location independence– being able to work wherever we want.

After living and working remotely for the past five years as an adventure travel photographer and blogger, I’ve enjoyed a unique and very fast-paced digital nomad lifestyle. One of the many perks of this is that I have been fortunate enough to live and work in many places around the world.

This is my curated selection of global remote work havens. From Chiang Mai’s rainforests to Prague’s historic center, this article explores the destinations that offer the perfect balance of productivity and lifestyle.

What to Look for When Deciding on a Remote Work Destination

If working remotely in a beautiful destination halfway across the world excites you, then this article is right up your alley! However, just because the idea sounds great doesn’t mean you should pack up everything and go– you must research the destination first. 

Here are the things to consider when deciding on a remote work location and the things that I prioritize when choosing the next destination to bunker down and get some work done.

WiFi & Internet Connection

Since most work is done online, a location with a fast Wi-Fi connection is essential for anyone working remotely.

While many of the best remote work locations on my list have cafes and co-working spaces with great Wi-Fi connections, it always pays to check online reviews and contact businesses to ask about their internet situation. Alternatively, I often use an app like Airalo to get high-speed eSims and hotspot from my phone when on the go.

Workspaces

Sometimes, working from home or your accommodation can get repetitive and boring, so you want to choose a location with various workspaces available. Whether it be a cafe with an excellent Wi-Fi connection or a dedicated co-working space, you want to ensure your desired destination has a variety of places for you to work.

Visa

Understanding your visa requirements are crucial. Whether you’re traveling from Australia to Mexico or from the USA to Southeast Asia to work, you must check whether you require a visa.

The best thing to do before deciding which destination to visit is to search online whether your desired destination requires you to have a visa. However, the great news is that many countries have created special digital nomad visas to attract remote workers.

You’ll have to pay more for accommodation, food and travel expenses in some places than others. Therefore, to ensure you have enough money to work and live comfortably, you must choose a destination that aligns with your budget.

Climate

Living and working in an environment with a great climate can benefit your health and overall well-being. Choosing a place like Indonesia or the Caribbean is perfect if you love being in warm, sunny destinations. If you thrive in colder climates, then a country in Northern Europe may be your best bet.

However, if you know that being in dull, rainy places gets you down, opt for a sunny, green destination that boasts lots of outdoor activities.

Activities

Like anywhere, you want to live and work in a place that has a great climate and plenty of activities for you to enjoy. If you’re considering moving to a sunny coastal destination, the outdoor and sea activities, such as surfing, snorkeling, and hiking, are endless. If you’re more drawn to a colder destination, skiing, and snowboarding may be some of the activities offered in the area. 

Safety

Safety is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing where to work, especially if it’s a country or city you’ve never been to before. A quick Google search will inform you of the safest countries to live and work in. Some of the safest cities in the world include Amsterdam, Tokyo, Singapore, and Osaka.

However, the crime rates of a certain destination shouldn’t put you off visiting a place you’ve been dreaming of. After traveling full-time for the past five years across six continents, I’ve only been a victim of theft and petty crime in Western countries.

I spent several weeks working here, staying in a heritage-listed fjord-side loft in Muo and it was by far one of the best places I’ve ever worked remotely. Although the internet connection is not as strong as in other European cities like Lisbon, it was adequate to work on.

25. Siargao, Philippines

The Philippines is one of Asia’s most beautiful island archipelagos. After living and working all throughout the Philippines, I believe that the surf and adventure island of Siargao offers the best remote work opportunities for digital nomads.

With a very laid-back atmosphere, modern cafes, delicious restaurants, and crystal-clear beaches, the General Luna area of Siargao is a great place to base yourself. Whether you want to learn to surf or tackle one of the best breaks on earth like Cloud 9, Siargao’s beaches have a wave for you.

Even though I’m not a big surfer, I still found plenty of things to do in Siargao, from exploring palm-tree-lined roads to swimming in crystal-clear coastal rock pools.
