35 Best Remote Work Locations for Digital Nomads & Travelers – We Seek Travel discoverescape.com

[ad_1]

A complete 2023 guide to the best digital nomad remote work locations around the world, updated yearly as I explore and discover more places to live and work.

Even before the pandemic shut offices and forced people to work from home, the rise of the digital nomad lifestyle has become a defining trend. That’s because being able to work remotely offers us the freedom-defining opportunity of location independence– being able to work wherever we want.

After living and working remotely for the past five years as an adventure travel photographer and blogger, I’ve enjoyed a unique and very fast-paced digital nomad lifestyle. One of the many perks of this is that I have been fortunate enough to live and work in many places around the world.

This is my curated selection of global remote work havens. From Chiang Mai’s rainforests to Prague’s historic center, this article explores the destinations that offer the perfect balance of productivity and lifestyle.

What to Look for When Deciding on a Remote Work Destination

If working remotely in a beautiful destination halfway across the world excites you, then this article is right up your alley! However, just because the idea sounds great doesn’t mean you should pack up everything and go– you must research the destination first.

Here are the things to consider when deciding on a remote work location and the things that I prioritize when choosing the next destination to bunker down and get some work done.

Travel Blogger working remotely in the mountains of Nepal

WiFi & Internet Connection

Since most work is done online, a location with a fast Wi-Fi connection is essential for anyone working remotely.

While many of the best remote work locations on my list have cafes and co-working spaces with great Wi-Fi connections, it always pays to check online reviews and contact businesses to ask about their internet situation. Alternatively, I often use an app like Airalo to get high-speed eSims and hotspot from my phone when on the go.

Workspaces

Sometimes, working from home or your accommodation can get repetitive and boring, so you want to choose a location with various workspaces available. Whether it be a cafe with an excellent Wi-Fi connection or a dedicated co-working space, you want to ensure your desired destination has a variety of places for you to work.

Visa

Understanding your visa requirements are crucial. Whether you’re traveling from Australia to Mexico or from the USA to Southeast Asia to work, you must check whether you require a visa.

The best thing to do before deciding which destination to visit is to search online whether your desired destination requires you to have a visa. However, the great news is that many countries have created special digital nomad visas to attract remote workers.

Some of those countries include

  • Mexico
  • Thailand
  • Indonesia
  • The Czech Republic
  • Estonia
  • Portugal
  • Barbados

The great news is that this list is always growing and I’m sure that many of the countries on this remote work location roundup will be included soon.

Cost of Living

While you may be tossing between the Metropolitan city of Sydney and the surf beaches of Bali, which is better for your wallet?

The cost of living is an important factor when considering where to work remotely. Relocating to a place where your dollar goes further is a big motivator for starting remote work in the first place.

You’ll have to pay more for accommodation, food and travel expenses in some places than others. Therefore, to ensure you have enough money to work and live comfortably, you must choose a destination that aligns with your budget.

Climate

Living and working in an environment with a great climate can benefit your health and overall well-being. Choosing a place like Indonesia or the Caribbean is perfect if you love being in warm, sunny destinations. If you thrive in colder climates, then a country in Northern Europe may be your best bet.

However, if you know that being in dull, rainy places gets you down, opt for a sunny, green destination that boasts lots of outdoor activities.

Activities

Like anywhere, you want to live and work in a place that has a great climate and plenty of activities for you to enjoy. If you’re considering moving to a sunny coastal destination, the outdoor and sea activities, such as surfing, snorkeling, and hiking, are endless. If you’re more drawn to a colder destination, skiing, and snowboarding may be some of the activities offered in the area.

Safety

Safety is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing where to work, especially if it’s a country or city you’ve never been to before. A quick Google search will inform you of the safest countries to live and work in. Some of the safest cities in the world include Amsterdam, Tokyo, Singapore, and Osaka.

However, the crime rates of a certain destination shouldn’t put you off visiting a place you’ve been dreaming of. After traveling full-time for the past five years across six continents, I’ve only been a victim of theft and petty crime in Western countries.

That said, it’s a good idea to get Digital Nomad insurance to cover travel mishaps and overseas health emergencies. I use SafetyWing for long-term travel.

Language

The language spoken in the city or country is an important factor in choosing where to work remotely. While English is spoken almost everywhere these days, leaving to speak the native language of the country will make it easier for you to work and enjoy social activities.

Therefore, when selecting a remote work location, you must ensure that English (or your preferred language) is understood and spoken. Alternatively, use your remote work opportunity to learn a second language!

Here are the 35 Best Remote Work Locations in 2023

1. Bali, Indonesia

Rated as one of the best expat work locations for young people as revealed by ExpressVPN, it’s no surprise that Bali in Indonesia has a high population of digital nomads.

From the fast internet speeds to the cheap costs of living and amazing culture, Bali has it all. Some of the best destinations for remote working in Bali include Ubud and Canggu.

At the end of the week, you can head to the beach for a surf or hop across to one of the many islands near Bali, such as Nusa Penida or Gili Trawangan. The options in Bali are endless!

Another drawing card of Bali being a great remote work location is that the government recently launched a digital nomad visa that allows workers to stay for up to five years without paying taxes.

Here are some of the things you can expect in Bali:

  • Average Internet Speed: 41+ Mbps
  • Cost of Living: 1000 USD per month
